The — কখন বসে, কখন বসে না
সহজ করে বুঝি
‘The’-র কাজ একটাই — নির্দিষ্ট করে দেওয়া। ‘I saw a boy’ মানে যেকোনো একটা ছেলে; ‘I saw the boy’ মানে নির্দিষ্ট সেই ছেলেটি।
এই ‘নির্দিষ্টতা’-র সূত্র ধরেই বাকি নিয়মগুলো মিলে যায়। পৃথিবীতে সূর্য একটাই, তাই the sun। নদী, সাগর, পর্বতমালা একটাই করে নির্দিষ্ট, তাই the Padma, the Himalayas।
আর যেখানে জিনিসটা সাধারণভাবে বোঝানো হয় (breakfast, English, cricket), সেখানে the বসে না।
যেখানে ‘The’ বসে

| দুইয়ের মধ্যে তুলনা | He is the better of the two. |
| নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি/বস্তু | The book you gave me is good. |
যেখানে ‘The’ বসে না

| একক পর্বতশৃঙ্গ | Mount Everest (the নয়) |
প্রতিষ্ঠান মূল কাজে নয়, অন্য কাজে গেলে the বসে: I went to the school to meet the headmaster.
