অধ্যায় ৮ · The Verb

Finite ও Non-finite Verb

সহজ করে বুঝি

Finite মানে সীমাবদ্ধ — কর্তা ও কাল অনুযায়ী যার রূপ বদলায় (I go, he goes, I went)। এরাই বাক্যের মূল verb।

Non-finite verb কর্তা-কাল মানে না, রূপ বদলায় না। এরা তিন ভাই: to + verb (Infinitive), verb + ing যা noun-এর কাজ করে (Gerund), আর verb + ing/ed যা adjective-এর কাজ করে (Participle)।

একটা পরীক্ষা মনে রাখো — ‘Swimming is good exercise’-এ swimming বাক্যের subject, অর্থাৎ noun-এর কাজ করছে, তাই Gerund। কিন্তু ‘A swimming boy’-এ সে boy-কে বিশেষিত করছে, তাই Participle।

Bare Infinitive কোথায় বসে (to বসে না)

  • Modal-এর পরে: can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must — He must go.
  • let, make, bid, see, hear, watch, feel-এর পরে: I saw him go.
  • had better, would rather, rather than-এর পরে: You had better go now.
  • but, except, than-এর পরে: He did nothing but weep.
  • কিন্তু passive-এ ‘to’ ফিরে আসে: He was made to go.

Gerund বসে যেসব ক্ষেত্রে

  • Preposition-এর পরে: He is fond of swimming.
  • নির্দিষ্ট verb-এর পরে: enjoy, avoid, mind, finish, stop, deny, admit — I enjoy reading.
  • worth, cannot help, look forward to, be used to, get used to-এর পরে: The book is worth reading. / I am used to walking.
  • সতর্কতা: ‘used to + V1’ (অতীত অভ্যাস) কিন্তু ‘be/get used to + V-ing’ (অভ্যস্ত)।
