Modal Auxiliary
সহজ করে বুঝি
Modal মানে ভঙ্গি — সম্ভাবনা, অনুমতি, বাধ্যবাধকতা কিংবা ক্ষমতা বোঝায়। এরা কখনো একা বসে না, সঙ্গে মূল verb লাগে।
একটা নিয়ম কখনো ভুলো না — modal-এর পরে verb-এর base form (V1) বসে, কোনো s/ing/ed নয়। ‘He can goes’ ভুল, ‘He can go’ শুদ্ধ।
আর modal-এর অতীত রূপগুলো (could, might, would, should) সবসময় অতীত বোঝায় না — বেশিরভাগ সময় ভদ্রতা বা কম সম্ভাবনা বোঝায়।
প্রধান Modal ও তাদের অর্থ

| may / might | অনুমতি, সম্ভাবনা, প্রার্থনা | May I come in? It might rain. |
| shall / will | ভবিষ্যৎ, প্রতিজ্ঞা | I shall go. He will come. |
| should | উচিত, উপদেশ | You should respect elders. |
| would | ভদ্র অনুরোধ, অতীত অভ্যাস | Would you mind? He would often visit us. |
| must | অবশ্যই, দৃঢ় বাধ্যবাধকতা | You must obey the law. |
| ought to | নৈতিক উচিত | We ought to help the poor. |
| need / dare | প্রয়োজন / সাহস | You need not go. He dare not speak. |
| used to | অতীতের অভ্যাস | He used to smoke. |
Modal-এর পরে সবসময় bare infinitive (V1) — He can go (goes/going ✗)।
